I'm looking for something with minimal functionality, such as what you see in gmail or even in stack overflow, but aimed at non developers, that is, no markdown syntax.

Any pointers?

I recommend FCK Editor and you're looking for a Rich-text editor.

Stackoverflow uses WMD .

You might want to look at Markitup as well, it supports Markdown, Wiki syntaxes. The support for putting source code isn't as good as WMD but it's more customisable.

Personally I don't think markdown is that difficult for non developers, only as much as wiki syntax is.

though there is a markdown syntax

Markitup is pretty neat.

Have a look at TinyMCE - http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/

Just tried it. Worked perfectly!

TinyMCE, FCK Editor, etc can be modified for minimal functionality quite easily. Link to tinymce website

I've used FCK Editor: http://www.fckeditor.net/ which is quite good.

There are so many different editors that you should look at most of them and choose by personal preference. Seriously: there is FCK Editor, TinyMCE, WMD, Markitup, etc.

Some offer an Microsoft Word look and feel as well.
