I'm a big PHP programmer. I would like to either learn C# or Python while contributing to a project or use my existing skills to join a project.

What do you recommend?

For open source projects, check out SourceForge:

http://sourceforge.net/

Once there, you can search based on topic, langauge, etc. Also make sure to check out the forums, because there are plenty of projects looking for specific skills (like PHP).

And as a plus, you get to log in with your OpenID.

Google Code and CodePlex have lots of C# projects.

CodePlex seems to have 1200 C# projects. Freshmeat has 300. Sourceforge "seems" to have over 3000+ . Hard to say for sure.

Look at Freshmeat or a open-source hosting-platform like Sourceforge. Both categorize projects by languages used, so you can find projects in PHP, Python and C#. You can also look at cofundos, here you get even paid, if you solve a task.

A good bet is to browse the open source hosting sites, take the time to hunt around. Others to check out:

CodePlex, Google Code
