Be very very careful with "free" options or ones that are so low-priced they seem too good to be true. Make sure they can give you a straight answer to the following:

  • what CPU and memory quota will you get?
  • what will they do if you exceed that quota?
  • do they have a clear upgrade path if you decide you need a higher quota later?

With many of the cut-price hosting sharks, the answer to the first question is essentially "close to zero", and the answer to the second question is "they'll just disable your site without warning", and the answer to the third question is sometimes "you have to buy a dedicated server".

Remember that the cost of having to move hosting company later and re-configure and re-write bits of your application to suit the new environment may far outweigh spending a few dollars a month from the outset!

Not such a thing as free hosting. If you find one, be very wary about it. See this question for some real (but paid) options.
