I am finding a suitable Drupal theme for news. My requirements are:

  1. the ability to put the login block, and the user information menu at the top of the screen.
  2. the ability to put a menu constructed using nice menu mode, at the content top area.
  3. supports both 2 and 3 column layout

I don't mind shelling out my credit card to buy one, but the most important thing is I must make sure that what I buy, I can use.

Anyone has any suggestion?

I always build from scratch, basing on Zen. It's simple and doesn't clutter up the basics (i'm looking at you, blueprint) while still full of enough extra productivity to speed things up.

One thing that you might want to take from blueprint is how they arrange theme preprocess functions into a neat folder/file-structure.

One of the better themes is Tapestry
http://demo.roopletheme.com/tapestry/

I have used this theme for several projects.

Here is part of their description from their site:

Tapestry provides Drupal users with many advanced features including:

* 20 Different Color Styles
* 30 User Regions
* Custom Block Theme Templates
* Suckerfish Menus
* Icon Support
* Advanced Page Layout Options
* Simple Configuration
* Custom Typography
* IE PNG Fix

Beside they have several other themes that I like, the first one I have ever seen from them was Beale Street that definitely put them o the map for me. http://demo.roopletheme.com/bealestreet/

I suggest you check it out :-)
