I'd like to set up a task tracking system on a hosted PHP server to track small-scale development projects.

Something simple but reliable would be great.

A Google search pulls up a few names, but I wanted to get some opinions from people who have used a PHP-based system for this.

Mantis has a lot of great features. It is more of a bug-tracking system, but is great for small projects and can be used to track tasks.

used it myself. it's svn integration proved useful over and over again.

Here's a list of Basecamp alternatives. Many of them are hosted, but not all. I have tried pretty much all applications on that list that you can host yourself. Personally I like ProjectPier and Collabtive.

Also, OpenSource CMS runs demo instances of various PHP collaboration suites which you can try for free.

ProjectPier development looks like it has picked up again, and I also found that the new Marine, Sand, and goCollab themes really make ProjectPier a delight. I compared it to AC (ActiveCollab) and found that I didn't need those other features that AC had. Was a good fit for me. Plus, it's PHP, so I can extend it myself.
