Everywhere I go in my country, all of the programming jobs are plain old maintenance projects, there are no development projects to work on, especially on the Microsoft technology stack (my technology of choice).

What should I do, should I migrate to another country and apply for programming jobs or should I stay in my country and follow my current career path to become a project manager someday?

From your description, I'd say emigrate.

I'd also say "don't make life decisions based on the offhand advice of people who don't know you, don't know your situation, and have no stake in the outcome".

This may sound cliche, but:

If you had $1,000,000 dollars, what would you want to do?

That'll be your answer.

If you have experience + contacts, you can try the freelance/one-man consultancy route, and work from where you are.

You are not alone mate. I love MS technologies (ASP.net and latest technologies) but I my work is all about ASP and VB6 for the past 4 years ;-)

But I find time to refresh myself with latest technologies. I learn new things and write blogs. I develop opensource applications and that keeps my "programming life" interesting ;-)

I am not in a position to migrate to another place and thats the reason I am stuck here.If you are in a poistion to move to another country then if you think its better do it.

And if you love programming "Please dont become a project manager"
