Hi,
I'm trying to let an <input type="text"> (henceforth referred to as “textbox”) fill a parent container by settings its width to 100%. This works until I give the textbox a padding. This is then added to the content width and the input field overflows. Notice that in Firefox this only happens when rendering the content as standards c...
Is it possible to create, for instance, a box model hack while using in-line CSS?
For example:
<div id="blah" style="padding: 5px; margin: 5px; width: 30px; /*IE5-6 Equivalent here*/">
Thanks!

Hey guys, I have the following div layout:
Everything is fine when I put normal txt elements in both the blue and the orange div. However, when I place an image in the orange div (which is 31px), the elements in the blue div get pushed down by about half the height of the blue div.

This has been driving me crazy for a couple of days now, but in reality it's a problem that I've hit off and on for the last few years: With HTML/CSS how can I make an element that has a width and/or height that is 100% of it's parent element and still has proper padding or margins?
By "proper" I mean that if my parent element is 200px ...
How should CSS 'margin' and 'padding' be used for vertical inter-paragraph spacing:
Can the vertical space between paragraphs be defined using padding and/or using margins?
If it can be done with either, then which is the better or more normal one to use?
Do you tend to define non-zero padding and non-zero margins, and if so then how m...
Try the following simple example:
<html>
<head>
<style>
div, input{
border: 1px solid #000;
margin: 2px;
padding: 3px;
width: 100px;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div>div</div>
<input value="input" />

</html>
Notice the div and the input gets different widths. In fact, the width of the input is 92px. For the input...
In the following web page, there is a gap of a few pixels between the image and the div. (I've tested in Firefox 3 and Safari 4.)
How can I close the gap?

Lets say I have a text box that I want to fill a whole line. I would give it a style like this:
input.wide {display:block; width: 100%}
This causes problems because the width is based on the content of the text box. Text boxes have margin, borders, & padding by default, which makes a 100% width text box larger than its container.
Is ...
Lets say I have some markup like this:

Hello,
I am new to jQuery and already I'm seeing problems with the built in
slideDown()/slideUp() animations. I'm using a flexible width
element, and when I use the function, the element does not return to
it's full width. I am thinking this has something to do with the way
jQuery finds the width of the element. I am experiencing the e...
Hi,
I have an image that is too big and I want to put it into an tag but I don't want to shrink the image, I'd like it just clipped.
This is due to IE incorporating margin and padding into the overall width.
Is there a way to sort this?

When the browser window is small enough to force a horizontal scrollbar and you scroll right the background color of the header ends before the edge of the browser. I am using a css class.

border-bottom: 1px solid #000;
background-color:#b8dbec;

I've always heard that margins in CSS will collapse when next to each other, so that settings two elements to have 40px all around will only result in 40px between them.
Is this an old way to render CSS, as in does it not work this way anymore?
This is the HTML and CSS. I can't seem to get the margins to collapse:

I've got an interesting box-model problem here. I have a header full of links, and for some reason my 0px margins are ignored and appear as 2px margins surrounding each link.
I've set up a test page at http://www.gimmesomeoven.com/test.htm to illustrate the problem. Each link in the header should be a 56px square link with a 1px border ...
After much frustration, I've realised that <input type="submit"/>s have a border-box box model, whereas <input type="text"/> has a content-box box model. This behavior is present in IE8 and FF. Unfortunately, this prevents me from applying this style for nice evenly sized inputs:
input, textarea

border: 5px solid #808080;

Hi there,
I have four Div placed using absolute positioning, each of them is a border of a rectangle they form once grouped together, in order to look like if a Dom element on the page is selected (this mimic the css border behavior using Div as overlays).
The left one has a border left set to "4px solid red", a width of 0px and a hei...
I made a site with simple instructions let's say:

border: 1px solid #333333;
}

I have two nested divs that are supposed to both be 400 pixels tall. The sidebar div shows up correctly in Chrome and Firefox, but in Internet Explorer 8 I'm having trouble getting it to be wide enough AND tall enough due to Internet Explorer's screwed up box model.
I've tried using the box model hack to fix it, but it didn't appear to...
I search for a CSS solution for the following problem. Inside a container we have two blocks, vertically aligned so, that they fill the the whole area of the container, do not overlap and as the bottom one enlarges, the top one shrinks (without stretching out of container size).
Consider we start with the layout created by code below (g...
