I have never actually held a job as a professional programmer, yet I have done a lot of training, and have contributed to production projects. I am about to do my Enterprise Architect Certification in Java, and would like to know what level jobs each certification would open the doors to.

What certifications in Java would correlate to what job positions?

Should a first time worker simply apply for a Junior Position, or do certs give you a leg up?

In my opinion, certifications will get you nowhere without experience. I'd target a junior-level position.

Certification is certainly a plus point but it is not going to a guarantee for the job.

Experience is more valuable and credible than some certification. All the certification says is that you managed to pass some test. I would also consider a Computer Science degree. If a formal degree is not an option (time, money, etc) then I'd start loading up on experience. You can also develop software on your own and advertise it on your resume.

Certifications typically can't hurt. If you contributed to an application and can speak intelligently about it you should be able to land an entry level position. Cert or no cert you're going to start entry level - I think the experience is much more valuable.

this is exactly why certifications are not taken seriously

apply for an entry-level job, maybe slightly higher if you think you are ready for it. Mention the certs only once, casually, as if everyone has them. They are icing, not qualifications - it's the difference between reading a book about bicycle racing and actually competing in the Tour de France.

Certification can help you get that interview, but beyond that, answering technical questions (at least the ones I have been for) usually come from experience. Sometimes it might actually work against you, where the interviewers would expect a little more from you, and end up pushing the limits a little bit more.

Having said that, you should try to challenge yourself and aim for something better than a junior position. You might not get it (see paragraph above), but the experience itself will be well worth it.

End of the day, no correlation between certification and job level. All depends on what the interviewer seeks and whether you'll be a good fit for the immediate team and organisation.

It is important to get that interview, without it, you cannot answer questions (even if you know the answer). I personally am not certified. I graduated as a mechanical engineer, minor in robotics, so I don't really even have the paper. I think for me, the experience I gained through various projects showed my initiative and ability.
