I understand that there is no way to set a user's wallpaper, but the apple program Voice Memos temporarily changes the locked screen while recording. This lets you know that the app is still recording, and even has a little red bar at the top showing you how many seconds have passed.

Is it possible for me to do this while my app is running? I can't seem to find any reference in the documentation.

Is this just one of the benefits of being the author of the OS?

Does this help?

I've read that post several times now, but I don't think it does. I don't want to actually change the background, just temporarily, while my app is running use it to provide status.Unless you are referring to the part where it says that apple will never let this happen. I am not sure if that applies to this case as they use this functionality in several of their apps.

Apple use a lot of functionality in their apps that they don't reveal to us "lesser beings". If you intend that app to go to the App store and can't find it in the APIs, I suggest you try your luck with the technical issue calls you're supposed to get from the iPhone Developer Program. If they can't help you, it's probably not possible within the app store limits...
