I want to do an Asynchrous NSURLConnection inside of an NSOperation on a background thread.

(it is because I'm doing some very expensive operations on the data as they come back that want to be done as the data comes in and in background)

Here is my first attempt:

IN my AppDelegate:

When this runs, I see the following message in my log:

This event happens at the very last [self didChangeValueForKey:@"isFinished"]; which suggests to me that I'm setting up the NSOperation wrong.

Move the lines:

[downloadAndParsePool release];
self.downloadAndParsePool = nil;

to the end of the -downloadAndParse: method.

I am looking to do something similar. How are you handling returning the data from this operation: KVO, delegate, performSelectorOnMainThread?

I'm curious about a design decision in the above code. The start method of a thread is used to start an asynchronous operation. The fetching of HTTP content is already asychronous, and yet the above code also launches a new thread manually. What is the point in that? Couldn't you just do away with the 'done' boolean, remove the polling loop in start, and handle the connection finished stuff by calling a helper method you write from connectionDidFinishLoading and didFailWithError?

The download is asyncronous, but I want it to call an xml parse as well and have that happen in background. This way the entire download, parsing and saving of results happens off the main thread.-ccm
