Am watching the movie "Flyboys" abut WWI and the pilots who fought in the first fighter-planes. In one scene, these pilots are painting their personal emblems on their own planes. And that made me think a bit... I have a colleague who is also an amateur-photographer. Another one who plays a lot of Rockstar who happens to like playing the guitar. I myself am fond of rendering my own 3D art. And the three of us are considered the best professionals in my company. Looking at my other colleagues, I noticed that we're also the only ones who are also active in some kind of art-form (music, photos, digital art) while the others are a bit more mundane, interested in sports or just busy with their children and family.

So, does having some secondary artistic skills really make developers better at their work or is this just my Ego? :-)

Let me make the Q more clear, to make it less suggestive-looking: If you look at yourself, do you consider yourself a good developer? And do you also have a certain amount of interest in something artistic? Like painting, photography or music? Yes or no will do but feel free to explain more if you do see a relation.

(Okay, you don't have top be good at art, but you need to have an interest.)

I don't think it's about art, but probably more about passion : being more than good in development often require people to be passionate...

... And maybe people who are passionate about something like art are more easily getting passionate by something like development ?

Still... just a wild guess ^^
(Thinking about it : I'm not quite passionate about art -- should I worry ?)

Passion? Yeah, that could explain it. The more passionate someone is, the more passionate they could be about their own work. Sounds reasonable.

Considering I'm passionnate about development, and that development is also my work, I hope it counts ^^
Pascal MARTIN
Well, that counts too, but if development is your only art you like. :-)

@Workshop Alex : some colleagues think I'm insane when I say coding is like art ^^ ;; @trolle3000 : I agree (both with what you said and with you agreeing with me :-D )

+1, I agree. In my own experience, people who are good at one thing are usually good at something else too. I don't think this is because they are inherently smarter - they think accomplishing things is fun, so they try to accomplish more. It could be playing the lute, painting, sports, martial arts or whatever.

@Pascal, all artists are a little insane, so you must be real good if they consider you insane. :-)
Workshop Alex
I'm not sure being considered as a bit insane is good... But thanks ^^

I don't believe there's anything particular to programmers. Those I know have a wide range of external interests and hobbies (in terms of scope, and in terms of time dedicated to it). The most artistic/musical people I know are not programmers, but artists and musicians :-)

No. Different people - different interests. Some people are sport active, have multiple interests / hobbies, and still do the job extremelly well. Others just dedicate themselves to it only, and concentrate on it.

It depends on the personality, culture ...

I'd say there is no correlation.
