I wish to start up an open source project and have been thinking about project hosting sites. I've been hearing suggestions to try something other than SourceForge. However, one thing SourceForge has that I haven't seen in other project hosts is its web site hosting. I would like to eventually set up a semi-professional, official site for regular people to visit and get my software. SourceForge's web space would make that easier. Are there any other project hosting services that provide such a web space that I may have missed?

Google Project hosting doesn't provide a website in the style Sourceforge does. On Google Project hosting it is somehow integrated in the online repository, though I think it fits nicely, it's clean, you have a wiki and download page, everything in place.
You may take a look at it. Here's an example of one of the projects hosted by Google itself.

Github has the pages feature that is integrated with the repo. It also a builtin wiki.

I will suggest you to go with these well known and well managed sites for hosting your project.
In my opinion you should not worry about the marketing site right now. You can find some very free/cheap hosting available. And if your project is doing good, you can actually approach some hosting provider to provide you ad supported hosting.

Thanks. I liked the guarantee of Sourceforge's web space, but I guess it doesn't matter until I put together something I can ship.

There are many ways to create sites for free on the web, e.g. Google Sites -- and by paying some modest amount to a domain name vendor, you can have such sites appear on your domain. Why does it matter to you if the free sites are tightly connected to the project hosting part of the equation, or more loosely connected, as in the case of Google's offerings?
