Anyone who is a fan of the Monkey Island series of adventure games from the early 90's will know how enjoyable and addictive this genre of computer games are.

Are there any tools out there that could help you build your own point-and-click adventure game?

The Adventure Game Studio (AGS) tool is perfect for doing this. It allows you to create the rooms, characters, animations, dialogues, objects etc which can be combined to form some very very impressive games.

A perfect example is 5 days a stranger by Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw. This game was developed in AGS and it is the best amateur game I have ever played. It honestly feels like it was professionally made.

I just thought I would share this brilliant tool with the StackOverflow community. I hope it helps you build your own adventure game.

Ok, i like to check that one out sometime.

You really should - the tool has undergone years of development so it is very good. I have built several little games of my own and I was amazed at what I had achieved with absolutely no experience at making games.

You could also take a look at Sludge, the engine behind such gems as Out of Order (which is an excellent game).

I will have to have a look at this, thanks for adding it :)

Without downloading? Do you insist on writing your own? There are numerous freely available systems for text adventures, and some for more graphic.

By far, imho, the best AG development tool is the Wintermute Engine (http://www.dead-code.org/). AGS is more popular because it has been around for ages, but Wintermute gives you considerably more power and flexibility when making 2D and 2.5D games.
