How is it possible to connect to outer server all the while when Mac is in sleep mode?

I use Mac OS X 10.5 (iTerm on screen). After several hours when Mac went to sleep mode, Mac seems to shutup itself. Then ssh connection came down.

So my question is, How is it possible to connect to outer server all the while when Mac is in sleep mode?
