It would be a help to all IT Professionals to have a reference here of all the Independent Professional Certifications of the world. The responses should not be aligned to a specific vendor but award certifications based on generally accepted standards and qualifications, similar to those awarded to "Chartered Accountants" - see for instance link below:

How about the IEEE certification program for CSDP (Certified Software Development Professional) and DSDA (Certified Software Development Associate)

I don't have any direct experience of these as I have not been completely sold on the idea of certification. To get certification requires some commonly accepted standards, as you mention, but do these exist for Software Development? There is SWEKBOK but I don't think that is commonly accepted yet. It also excludes vendor related skills which is probably where most software developers spend most of their time.

ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) provides three well-recognized certifications for IT management, assurance and auditing:

  • CISA is for IT Auditing.

  • CISM is similar to CISA but for management of the domains that CISA will audit. It is said to be easier; some people take both of them due to their similarity.

  • CGEIT is for IT Governance.

(ISC)^2 provides a harder, more valuable security certification, the CISSP.

Then there's the Project Management Proffessional.

You can also get certified for ITIL with ITIL Foundations, ITIL Practitioner or ITIL Manager depending on your profile.
