Is it possible to set up a ad hoc network between an iPhone and a totally different device like camera, scanner or printer and build a data tunnel between them to exchange data or services.

I believe iPhone does not have the provision of creating an ad hoc network. So i am assuming that the other device are the initiator of the ad hoc network.

I tried doing the same with a mac book and iPhone and i could surf on the phone after enabling internet sharing. But i wanted to make sure that its possible with other devices as well

I believe the upcoming WiFi Direct is a way to do it.

How did you get internet sharing to work with your macbook. I have a macbook with 10.5.8 installed and I cannot get my iphone to surf the web using internet sharing. The iphone connects, gets an IP address and can connect to the macbook to download files, but it cannot get out to the internet. I have tried manually defining DNS servers on the iphone and macbook but the iphone still does not surf.

Actually...I'll tell u wat i did...I created a ad hoc network on my mac book. My mac book was connected to the ethernet. I enabled internet sharing on that. I set a couple of easy properties there. And i selected the ad hoc network i created there in my iPhones network setting page. Tats abt it.
Probably you did not set the internet sharing property on your mac book Preference-Sharing options. I have 10.6.3..Might be different on urs.
