Has anybody experience running WF based Workflow instances in the Azure web role? Could you please share your experiences.

A:

Workflow was removed from Azure's .NET Services (now called AppFabric) in July 2009. You can see the blog post here.

To date, there hasn't been anything announced regarding Azure running the new Workflow that shipped along with .NET 4 (and Azure roles will have .NET 4 support within the next month or two, based on the team's post here).

The only possibility for Workflow today is to run it on an on-premise server. You could host your workflow instances in Windows Server AppFabric running on Windows 2008 Server R2.

David, thanks for the reply.I am aware that the workflow is no longer available as a part of Azure .Net services. I read on some forums that it is possible to host workflow in Azure web role, I am trying to findout more details about it.

I'm not sure if you can host the workflow runtime as I haven't tried it, but I know there's no SQL Azure persistence provider, so you'd have work to do on that.
