Hello all,

When you've created your own CMS or bloggingsystem you've probably came across this problem as well. Currently I'm working on a new version of the CMS my clients are using and one of the most frustating things to look for is decent RTE with table support.

I've read numerous blogs where different RTE's were compared. Eighter I hated the skin, it's not crossbrowser compatible, there was a lack of documentation (and users) or there was no table support.

I must say, I'm most impressed by nicEdit. That's a prefect example of how such a component show function. The downside of nicEdit is that it doesn't support tables and there is no decent file- and imagehandling. Allthough file- and imagehandling aren't the hardest part. I've tried to build some tablesupport, but really, that's a hell of a job!

Components which are great at functionality are tinyMCE, CKEditor (the former FCKEditor, allthough this one has also a big downside; it's going commercial (since CKFinder is not free anymore)). But these two, maybe best, components aren't very lightweight...

Components which make me cry are Xinha, that Yahoo thingy and WYMEditor.

So, bear with me. What is in your opinion the RTE component to use nowdays? My must requirements are:

  • Lightweight;
  • Table support;
  • File and image browsing (not uploading per se).

Hope to hear from you! Thanks for the effort you make to respond.
