You know, I just want to create a game with lobby, chat, rooms, registration, etc.

I've just googled it, and found only SmartFox. Seems promising, but is there any other?

A:

That totally depends on your game needs, your team skills and the budget/time you can afford.

Klaim
The game is something like a Link5 with lobby, room/player select, add buddy, chat common/private. Team skills are kinda flexible. Budget is "starting".
Geri
So it is turn based.
Geri
You should put that into your question. "Team skills are kinda flexible" means nothing. You should say what is the team experience so far.
Klaim
If I'd had a team, then we'd developed a brand new engine of course. I'm a single developer.
Geri
...then you are your team. If you never developped a game before, I suggest you start small, by making a little game on PC first.

Weird chat here. Nothin' about the topic.
Geri
My answer will not change: it's totally game, budget and team dependant. Anyway the server side of any game can be anything as it's a separate technology frim the client. Nobody will answer you because anything you are able to setup will fit.
Klaim
Thats a pity. Then I go Along with SmartFox - http://www.smartfoxserver.com/

The social SKDs OpenFeint (http://www.openfeint.com/) and ScoreLoop (http://www.scoreloop.com/) are adding multiplayer to their features. But this is "just" turnbased multiplayer (based on HTTP). For realtime you need a Socket Server ideally with UDP/reliable UDP.

Thanks, seems exactly what I've been looking for. By the way, I have now installed an instance of SmartFox Basic, what seems so confortable with the ready-made iPhone API. The only problem is to create some server-side scripts.
Geri
Pricing is just as heavy as SmartFox's. I have to realize some profit from compactTangram© - http://gotoandplay.freeblog.hu/categories/compactTangram/ - app.
Geri
Photon has a free edition - http://www.exitgames.com/Photon/Pricing. If you get more than 50 CCU you should be fine to pay some license fee.
