The most well known one is probably Google Adsense. But there are quite a few players who are trying to be an advertising agency on the web. Google is the leader in the area and they have more advertisers and therefor a larger stock of ads for your site.
Advantages:
- Easy to get going
- You don't need a marketing dept.
- Useful with lower traffic volumes or smaller sites
Disadvantages
- Earnings per 1000 impressions can be quite low
- Ads are matched with your content. If there aren't any ads that match your content very well your earn less.
- Ad blockers can easily filter out the ads
