Which is the best open source web rich text editor and why? I have used the YUI editor before, but I am looking for something more extensible and manageable and that will ultimately prove more stable.

I don't know about extensible and manageable, but Notepad2 has effectively replaced Notepad for me.

I like Notepad++ as a Notepad replacement.

I would say EMACS or VIM.

Sorry for the lack of commenting [low rep], but this guy means a web rich text editor, not a text editor desktop application.

Clearly. I tried to get that point across in my comment.

SciTE

I didn't know SciTE had a web-component...

It supports a large number of languages, among them HTML, Javascript, PHP, CSS, etc.

@Secko: No, what I think the original poster is looking for is a text editor component to embed in a website.

@FrustratedWithFormsDesigner I think he's looking for a tool to build in.
