What is the maximum value of an unsigned 64-bit integer in English?

+28  A:

two to the power of sixty-four minus one

Brian R. Bondy
I'd say "two to the sixty-fourth minus one", personally.

+25  A:

eighteen quintillion four hundred and forty six quadrillion seven hundred and forty four trillion seventy three billion seven hundred and nine million five hundred and fifty one thousand six hundred and fifteen?

I think the pluralizations need to be singular, e.g. "quintrillion", "quadrillion", etc...
Eric J.
@Eric J.: Thanks, I'd never realized that that was the case, though it fits with how numbers are written in newspaper headlines etc. Less worried about that mistake than that I wrote tree instead of three though...

In American English, at least, you don't say "and" except at a decimal point. I've heard Brits argue over whether saying "and" is a British English thing, or just plain wrong.

@Ken: so he wrote the answer in real English (English English) instead of American English. Good for him!

@Jonathan: Sorry, I didn't think to click the OP's profile. I didn't realize he spoke a minority dialect!

shoulnd't end with sixteen?
aioobe
@aioobe If bit zero is set, it must be an odd number.
anon
@aioobe: If you have 64 bits, there are 2^64 combinations of these, so you can store the values 0, 1, 2, 3, ..., 2^64 - 1. To see all digits of 2^64 - 1, ask Wolfram|Alpha. It does end with "15".

According to Number size18,446,744,073,709,551,615 is 18 quintillion and something.

Where did you get 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 from?! In my universe, 2^64 - 1 = 18446744073709551615.
Andreas Rejbrand
Thanks, I started linux and used bc typed 2^64 and forgot to subtract -1, fixed that

+1  A:

About 18 million million millions

1 followed by 18 noughts

If you had this many paperclips, it about the same as 46 billion blue whales

It's only around 3 thousand million million sheets of paper stacked on top of each other to reach the sun.

Or "a lot"

Frankly, in English you aren't going to hear it on the street anyway. Your audience would fall asleep somewhere around quintillion.
