What are some tools that the professionals use? I want to make some professional looking designs for myself, but don't know where to start. I have 4 years of programing experience and about 5 years of web design experience, but I'm just not good with designing a layout.

Adobe Create Suite is pretty popular. It's my fav.
I know some people who use Gimp or CorelDraw.

Grow up. Nobody forces you to use their products but you were the one asking which products other people use.

Grow up? What is your problem? I was stating that I didn't like Micro$oft. Also, no I didn't ask what programs "other people used" I asked what programs professionals used.

Professionals use Microsoft products. I don't like them either, so I don't use them (other than at work where I have to use Visual Studio). You can not like the product, but that comment was inappropriate.

Windoze is really not the way to go for web development in terms of speed, simplicity, and versatility (IE 8 got a 20/100 on Acid3)

@pop850, what does the IE8 Acid3 test have to do with what you develop with? Like it or not, most of your users are going to be using IE8, so your site better work on it.

@Gnarly, hating 'Micro$oft" is for /., this is place were we offer solutions, not troll and bash companies because we think they have too much money or something. Grow up because your comments are childish. Also, many professionals are using Microsoft products. I've used a lot of IDEs and I have to say Visual Studio is far and away the best IDE I have ever used.

@Gna LOL you changed the 's' in Micrsoft to a dollar sign! Holy crap, I've never seen that before! Its awesome clever and original! You should start your own web comic.

In my experience as a web designer all the pro's are using a very similar setup to this:
- Top of the line Mac Book Pro
- 24 Apple LCD Display
- Photoshop
- Illustrator
- TextMate or Coda
- Transmit
