If the machine can recognise that you've hit F1 then the keyboard has stopped failing. Always seemed obvious to me but most people seem genuinely enlightened when I explain it.

I like the "wrong magic" error I used to get from the Java runtime when I'd ftp a class file in ascii mode from Windows to a Unix box when I was at Uni....The message "Wrong magic" to someone trying to learn to program for the first time is just about as confusing as it gets!
