Other people have asked and the answers state that this is not possible.

But would anyone know if the feature request made it in to iOS 4.0 then?

If it's for a good reason, then "yes, yes I do". My good reason is to create a profile app where I can program the iPhone to automate the ringer volume depending on my location. (eg. like in the office, it should be on vibrate). The machine is capable, it just depends if Apple has chastised it. (as usual)

Then it'll have to be "this app wants access to your ringer volume". I imagine that it must be possible (e.g. by faking touches to MPVolumeSlider, or via private APIs), but it's behaviour that'll be frowned upon by Apple. It makes Android more tempting, admittedly...
