Hi!

There are many hit games, that are out-of-date, and have their code released to the public.

Such code would be of great interest for the programmer, wishing to see some good (and often creative) principles of game design, but not the theory (as in many books), but the real deal.

So, do you know of any sites, providing lists of (now) open-sourced games and game engines?

Note that I am not interested in the current AAA-level open-source game engines, as I already know quite a few and this is a different matter altogether. I am looking for historical gems!

Thanks!

It's not a list of many games, but you can look through the code of one particular historical gem.

I am not sure, that's the place to make the list of gem's codes and I am looking for a list that is _already_ done. Thanks anyway!

Wow! Never knew that Q4's source has been released, too. Thanks!

I am sure there is a lot to learn in the Q4 source but I don't think it contains everything needed to build the game. I could be wrong though.
Jay
Well, Wikipedia says it's the full source. Thanks!

It is the full game code, does not include the engine. This is the code that you need to build a mod for it, not the entire game.

Well, too bad then.

You are in a maze of twisty little passages...

Thanks! I was talking of some more serious games, i.e. closer to game design problems. Although, I myself enjoyed Hugo 2, too.

By the way, never heard of this game and it seems full of creativity. Thanks!

Also you can find some other gems: http://www.3drealms.com/duke3d/index.html http://www.3drealms.com/sw/index.html http://www.3drealms.com/rott/index.html

Search for source on those pages that you will find the download link.

Yeah, I've seen these. Thanks. The more successful games there however, doesn't have source codes.

There was this thread over on the gamedev stackexchange board: Which is more general open source games.

And then this wikipedia link: List of open source games.
