I'd like to know what you think the best desk for a developer is. Size and price aren't a huge factor.

I recently started working from home and am in need of a new desk solution. I already got my HM Mirra (sooooo yummy!), but wanted to trade up my CostCo folding table for something better. I'm thinking adjustable, but am open to all suggestions.

NOTE: Just wanted to update (and give a reason for my choice of answer, I suppose). I ended up getting an ajustable-height frame for < $550 and then bought a piece of 3/4" plywood with oak laminate and trim. Still have to stain the wood, but all told this setup was less than $650. Thanks for all your input.

Just a simple, cheap IKEA table with nothing under the desk to bang my knees on. I hate that expensive desks have all that scaffolding underneath to hit my knees on.

Those adjustable height ones are the best. I saw one on Lifehacker a while back that was motorized. How awesome would that be? When you back got tired you could just hit a button to raise it up and stand for a while. If money wasn't an issues that is what I would get without question. Problem is that it retailed for around $3000-$400 (at that time), so money became an issue :-)

The ones mentioned on Lifehacker were from IKEA and they have apparently stopped selling them now, but I found some here http://www.beyondtheofficedoor.com/adjustable-height-table.php which are more around $1000-$1250. Not bad.

The massive Ikea Galant with all the fixings.

Before you get comfy, turn it over and install pegboard to hide all the wires!

I use an IKEA Galant at work and I bang my knees on the metal frame throughout the day, but I use a foot stool too so maybe I'm asking for it... YMMV. IKEA Vika Amon / Vika Curry all the way, baby!

Amen. Good desks are simple to build, and a pleasure to use. Plus, you could build several workshops with the cost of one of these other desks.

@David I've long since replaced the mouse with an MX Revolution, but I actually like the keyboard.

I love that layout. However, I don't think I could deal with that wooden lip at the front. Or is that just a trick of perspective?

I bought the DMI belmont computer L desk with hutch and a bookcase. The stuff is EXPENSIVE but it has wood veneers and should last a long time. All the crap from Ikea and similar that I've bought in the past lasted a few years and then was in the trash when it started falling apart.

If money is not an issue, do yourself a favor and check http://www.anthro.com. They can even build a desk/workstation off your specifications. Check out the "Carl's Table: Model CT08" to start your imagination. The Verte Chair is amazing too.
