Our marketing department needs something to help their communication with distributors worldwide. They want to share marketing material (pdfs, docs, videos, pictures) - basically, a password-protected website that looks like a "beefed-up FTP server". Something like www.box.net, except that, for several reasons, we want to host it at our own servers.

It should:

  • Be non-geeky and easy to use.
  • Be primarily intended for file sharing.
  • Be able to manage/admin files easily (move to different folders, organize, update).
  • Have configurable user permission controls.
  • Have some search functionality.
  • Have some sort of image gallery / previews for picture materials.

Are there any ready solutions with the above features? Open source running on Linux would be preferable, but commercial solutions are not completely out of question if they fit our needs perfectly. Of course a full-blown CMS like Drupal could be customized to do this, but it would be a considerable effort.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Edit: I realized that what I'm describing is pretty much Windows Explorer (or any modern file manager, for that matter), except that is should be a web site. Relay looks interesting, but it's v0.1 Beta...

You can also accomplish what you need in Drupal.

Have you at least worked with Drupal enough to get an idea how much effort would be needed to accomplish your goal? You have the right idea yet you want to abandon it in fear of how much effort would have to be managed.

Any CMS you choose will require some customization.

I'd give Relay another look as well.

I have nothing against Drupal (quite the contrary!) and if there's some ready module that does what I need, please let me know.

DotNetNuke has many document management modules. Open-DocumentLibrary looks particularly functional and Document Exchange 5 has many, many features.

Thanks! These look so good that I might be ready to relax my slight anti-only-Microsoft-platform attitude in this case ;-)
