What is your favourite programmer's context-menu addition for your Windows machine?

My favourites:

By the way, cmd window here is built in to the context menu for folders in Vista. CTRL+SHIFT+RCLICK on the background of the folder (with no item selected) and it will be on the menu.
jeffamaphone
aah, a hidden vista trick :-) thanks.
Razzie
@jeffamaphone, I think you just need to SHIFT+RCLICK :)

'Edit with Notepad++'

"Edit with Vim"

I was going to say "Edit with Notepad." I like not having to go through all sorts of submenus to open a new file type.

  • WinMerge
  • Edit with ConTEXT
  • Send To > WinSCP (for upload)

Unlocker

Karim
interesting... I'd never seen that program before, but I have a suspicion it will quickly become a favorite.
rmeador
Agreed, that one looks promising. Downloading it now.

How on earth have I never heard of this? Fantastic.

Spotters badge for you Karim!

unlocker _was_ one of my favorites. i am happy with win7x64 but sadly no more unlocker....
Sky Sanders
sky-sanders, I am using Unlocker 1.9 for Windows 7 x64, it does what is expected of it, integrating flawlessly on my context menu :) you will have to install the x64 version of the installer for it to work perfectly on your system...

Much faster and better than the built in Send To > Compressed (zipped) Folder

Select Left Side to Compare

(I'd also go for "Unlocker" and "Editplus")

Besides the ones already mentioned (Command prompt/Powershell here, Notepad++), I rather like COM registering & unregistering, .NET assembly GAC:ing and unGAC:ing.

And, of course, Dependency Walker for checking DLL exports and static dependencies.

WinMerge > Compare / Compare To

Send To. I like to populate my Send To folder with:

  • The various editors I use (text, hex, word processing, IDEs, etc.)
  • Frequently used folders; project folders, LAN shares, home folder, temp folder...
  • Frequently used command line tools and scripts

Ninotech Path Copy which is a better path copy than the other references on this page. Lets you copy the path in a variety of forms, e.g. short version (c:\progra~1\foo) as well as the long version, UNC path for network drives, and file:// URL form, among others.

diff-ext for being able to compare files. (Can use with WinMerge, but is superior because you can go to one folder, right-click on a file and select "Compare Later", then go to another folder, right-clock on a file and select "Compare To nnn" where nnn is the previous file - plus other options.)

OpenExpert for being able to open different programs for a particular file extension.

Considering the amazing amount of stuff you can do with a terminal, I have to endorse the following:

  • Everything under the TortoiseSVN sub-menu - so useful.
  • +1 for the people that have mentioned 7-Zip -> Add to archive... - fast and easy.
  • Who Lock Me?
  • And after selecting 2-3 files OR folders - KDiff -> Compare
  • Textpad
