How to find out what technology is used in a site?

How do you determine what technology a website is built on?

Is there any way to find out what technology is used in a site? As in, whether its built with PHP, Ruby, .NET etc?

I googled, and found this site - www.builtwith.com, but it doesn't always give results for all sites (client side yes, its easy, but what about server side?)
