As a web developer I'm very adept at putting the site together, but I can't design worth squat. What would be a good place to go for getting a design for my personal website?

Some points to think about

  • Modest budget as its just my personal website.
  • Obviously looking for more then just a free template to use
  • Would want some initial input on the design.

Did you try Rentacoder?

You could post a contest at 99Designs.com and set a price you are willing to pay. Would-be designers then have the option of determining whether the payoff is worthwhile.

A great place to go is 99 designs. It might be a little over the top for a personal website, but if you take a look at the currently open contests, you can get a pretty good idea of what you will get for your money. You have a lot of input on the final design. People submit drafts early and you can rate them and comment on them.

You can see what this contest got for about $200 dollars. If you are looking for something more simple, I bet you could get away with even less!

Also, have you thought about using something like Wordpress or Drupal for your personal website? Specifically with Wordpress, you don't even have to have a blog section, you can just use the templates as your site design. There are some pretty fantastic, free Wordpress templates out there that you could use. If you want to make things a little bit more interesting, you could integrate some free stock photos from this website. I have gone this route and it makes managing the website extremely easy.

there's a big movement against such sites and speculative work in general: http://www.no-spec.com

I concur. The Open Source Web Design group is awesome.

Similar to those above is Crowd Spring.

I did some work through ifreelance.com several years ago when I was still in college. If you're on a tight budget, that might be a good place to look, but be careful and be sure to do the necessary due diligence on anyone you decide to work with. I've been stung once but have had good experiences otherwise.
