What is the best website to find freelance programmers? I would like to outsource an iphone application ( possibly the rest of the mobile platforms as well).

Has anyone used:

http://www.getafreelancer.com

http://www.elance.com

http://www.guru.com

Thanks

Good luck

I have used rentacoder for:

i) developing simple idea in a langage I was not familiar with ($100)

ii) designing logo for product ($10)

iii) developing Flash animation ($60)

In the three cases I get what I asked. Don't expect miracles but you can expect a working application. You can see the coder's reputation and use it to decide.

My 2 cents

I've been using http://www.odesk.com/ with great results. But I'm hesitant to give them large projects with sensitive information. Any ideas on giving foreign programmers access to sensitive information? Any safeguards? How about contracts - any use?

Hello Rudy,That's another question, isn't it? I think it's answered somewhere here in SO and the answer basically was that no, you don't have any protection. Even if you use contracts and NDA, doing a legal prosecution of someone in a different country, far away, in a different language in a different legal system is too costly.

Having been registered on both guru and odesk, they are both terrible from a contractor's POV. At least someone who is serious about their craft. Most of the time you see your competition bidding paltry sums for jobs (that you know they can't handle), using US-based phone numbers when it's plain as day they are not based in North America (the wonder of VOIP). Or the budgets of "Under $250" from most of the clients (an entire iPhone app for barely 3 figures?). Don't even get me started on odesk and their "install our spy-cam software so the client can take pictures of you working during the day" -- I didn't realize I was about to sign up with some totalitarian regime. (I never installed the software, and never went back to complete the "application" process.)

If you don't care about the quality of the output, I'm sure those sites are great.

But if you do care about the quality of the product (i.e. if you care about getting an actual solution to your problem), start by hitting up a local programmers meeting in your area. Try meetup.com for a listing, or find a programmer group on LinkedIn. (Go to the watering hole, in other words.)

I figure there have got to be good cheap foreign (india?) programmers somewhere. What about findafreelancer.com?

I'm sure there exist "good cheap foreign programmers" on all those sites. The question is, what are the odds you'll find a diamond in the rough? Is it worth your time? Can you afford the cost of re-doing a project if it's not done right the first time? How much experience do you have managing software projects? How much experience do you have working with remote employees? Who may not speak English very well? How risk-adverse are you? How important is it that your project done on time? On budget? On quality? I'd ask more questions but I'm about to run out of characters to type in this box.
