Hi,
Whenever I am desiging a new application, I tend to use paper and pencil to get an idea of the database structure, major modules and feature set etc.
I do own a copy of mind manager but I find that nothing beats the personal touch of pencil and paper. The negative aspect of this approach is I end up having 2-3 pages full of drawing...
What characteristics do you find more valuable in a software architect? How to evaluate one?
For example:
Is in-depth knowledge of a stack more important than a good overall knowledge of different stacks?
How important are coding skills in comparison to other skills?
How important are documentation skills considering agile methodolo...
My ideal position would be designing systems and programs, I love the industry and the technology but I just don't really like ONLY coding.
People at my work say that nowadays you can't just be a software architect.
Any insight?
NOTE: I didn't say I don't like coding, I meant I don't like ONLY coding (see edit above).

I keep hearing about the "Architect" title in larger software corporations, and am interested to know what they do and how they get it done.
Is it their job to prepare visual diagrams outlining the functioning of the software? and what programs do they use to aid their design? Like Class Designing?
Do they design at a higher level and ...
Furthering my previous question about what an SA does, I'd like to know how SA's usually manage the developers under them. Is it:
a manual process, where they meet with developers to make them understand the design
semi automatic, where they draw diagrams that mostly suffice to explain the code to developers
fully automatic, where they...
I got out of college in 06 with Bachelors in CS and since then have been working as a Java Analyst. Last year I got into a project where I am the lead java developer. But somehow I do not feel confident about being a 'lead'. I believe I am just the lead because I maybe know a wee bit more than other 2 developers.
I am trying to make t...

Did you become an architect by the help of a mentor?
What are the activities / tips / methodologies etc etc you learned from your mentor?
How you got linked with your mentor?

Should I start programming less and designing more?
Should I stop reading programming books, and start reading more books about pattern designs, etc?
Should I stop focusing primarily on Microsoft technologies and open up my horizons with other technologies (in order to get a broader perspective)?
How should I change my min...
Anyone who has done it recently? Can you give me some insights on the books, not many good ones out there.
Truly appreciate it,
Thanks.

Working with Visual Studio 2010 and having all the UML diagrams in the VS solution, I wonder if it is possible to export those diagrams (classes, workflows) in Enterprise Architect to benefit of its tools.
In brief, I would like to define in Enterprise Architect test scenarios for all these classes and workflows but I would like not to ...
I create my diagrams in Enterprise Architect.
Sometimes I need to embed them in Power Point presentations but it does not look good in the UI as it would if I would write them there from scratch.
Is there a way to do it nicely? Which tools would you recommend to manage a long persisting architecture and also present it nicely in present...
