I have a remote tracking branch tracked locally in my local repository using 'git branch -b branch-name origin/branch-name'.
My remote branch is test2/test2 (origin/branch-name) which is being tracked locally as test2.
The origin is also named test2.
I haven't checked-out my local tracking branch test2.
When i do a 'git pull origin rem...

I periodically get message from git that look like this:
Your branch is behind the tracked remote branch 'local-master/master'
by 3 commits, and can be fast-forwarded.
I would like to be able to write commands in a shell script that can do the following:
How can I tell if my current branch can be fast-forwarded from the remote bran...
A noob here.
I have a personal Macbook and I want to use Git to track the changes etc. I want to just init a repo on my macbook and work there. Is this a good idea?
What if:
I have a main repo somewhere in my Macbook HD, like, /Users/user/projects/project1 and clone it to another area on my macbook where I actually perform developmen...
When I want to merge one branch to another I use to do the following(in this example master to custom):
git checkout master && git pull && git checkout custom && git merge master
Can somebody suggest how to simplify this?
Thanks, Bogdan.

I would like to mark an arbitrary group of commits/changesets with a label.
Commit 1 *Mark 1
Commit 2 *Mark 2
Commit 3
Commit 4 *Mark 1
Commit 5 *Mark 2
The goal is to easily locate all the changes for a specific mark, and to have that grouping persisted in the VCS directly, as opposed to some outside system like a bug tracking sy...

I have 5 branches of one system - let's call them master, London, Birmingham, Manchester and demo. These differ in only a configuration file and each has its own set of graphics files.
When I do some development, I create a temp branch from master, called after the feature, and work on that. When ready to merge I checkout master, and g...

I merged the wrong way between two branches. I then ran the following:

I am now back at the previous commit (which is where I want to be). Was that the correct thing to do?
The bad commit is still in the repository, is that okay or should I do something else to remove it from the repository?

I have the following line in my .gitignore file:
var/www/docs/.backroom/billing_info/inv.pl

I dont understand how a file which is explicitly listed as an ignore pattern could be listed as modified when I want git to igno...
I have a private repo in github that is the complete source code to my cms. Now I have a few local customers that I want to use the same code base on but with different themes. Is it better to fork the original project out into a repo for each one. Or use a submodule and create a new repo for each customer?

It appears to insert less blank lines the closer I type the command to the bottom of the terminal window. If I type it at the top of the terminal window, it inserts nearly a full window height of blank lines; if I type it at the very bottom, no blank lines are inserted.
It seems like the pager program is pushing output to the bottom ...
I have a dirty working tree, dirty because I made changes to source files and touched up some images. I was trying to add just the images to the index, so I ran this command:

Hi,
I'm trying to create a new git repository from existing folder. I've created a .gitignore file in the root of the folder. But if I say 'git add *' 'git commit' 'git push' files that should be ignored still get commited to the remote repository. I'm on Windows.
Also I've bought a license for SmartGIT. It also seems to ignore .gitigno...
We have a Subversion repository that is not going to move to git in the short to medium term, but I would like to use a DVCS for controlling and versioning 3rd party libraries.
Is there a way of using something like svn:externals to fetch/link a revision from git, driven by the Subversion checkout?
...
My workplace uses Subversion for source control so I have been playing around with git-svn for the advantages of my own branches, commit as often as I want without touching the main repo, etc.
Since my git svn checkout is local, I have cloned it to a network share as well to act as a backup. My thinking is that if my desktop takes a dum...
I was reading http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/gitignore.html and the 6 points used to explain the ignore patterns seem to be describing a custom variant of a glob search syntax.
I am more familiar with Mercurial, which allows to explicitly ignore via glob or regex patterns, no questions asked.
Is there any similar funct...
