I'm working on implementing a reasonably simple XML serializer/deserializer (log file parser) application in C# .NET with VS 2008. I have about 50 unit tests right now for various parts of the code (mostly for the various serialization operations), and some of them seem to be failing mostly at random when they deal with file I/O.

How are constructs of io operations handled by a compiler? How are the appeoaches different for processors supporting MMIO and I/O mapped I/O? Are there any optimi...
I have a perl program that takes input and output file arguments, and I'd like to support the convention of using "-" to specify standard input/output. The problem is that I can't just open the file name, because open(my $input, '<', '-') opens a file called -, not standard input. So I have to do something like this:

I would like to read and write the contents of large, raw volume files (e.g. MRI scans). These files are just a sequence of e.g. 32 x 32 x 32 floats so they map well to 1D arrays. I would like to be able to read the contents of the binary volume files into 1D arrays of e.g. float or ushort (depending on the data type of the binary file...
I have some Linux code that monitors our hardware by collecting temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds, from the motherboard using inb(), outb(), inl(), etc. low level i/o functions.

I have a DataInputStream that I obtained from a Socket. Is there any way I can set a timeout for dis.read(...)? Currently I spawn a new thread to do the read. While the parent thread does a thread.join(timeout) to wait before interrupting it. I am aware of nio, but I don't think I want to refactor that much at this point. Thanks.
