I need to run multiple background threads in a thread pool with timeout.
The scheme is something like:
#!/usr/bin/env ruby
require 'thread'
def foo(&block)
bar(block)
end
def bar(block)
Thread.abort_on_exception=true
@main = Thread.new { block.call }
end
foo {
sleep 1
puts 'test'
}
Why if i run that i get no output? (an...
In API documentation, and sometimes even used in discussions here on Stack Overflow, I sometimes see the pound (#) character used instead of the dot (.) as the separator between the class name and the method name. For example:
Settings#maxPageSize
I'm wondering what this usage means, and where it comes from?

I'm trying to check if a find method returns a result. My find method is the following:
post = Post.find(:all, :conditions => { :url => params['url'] }, :limit => 1)
What would be a good way to check that post contains a result?

How do I include the 'autofocus' attribute on an HTML5 form using the text_field form helper in ruby?
e.g. <%= f.text_field :email %>
Where does autofocus go?
Thanks

I am wondering if it is possible to dictate the order (i.e. :order => 'created_at DESC') within the view. I realize that logic in the view is not ideal but I seem to be having some problems locating where to affect this output.
For instance, here is my code:
<% @user.questions.each do |question| %>
<%= link_to_unless_current h (ques...
How the heck does Ruby do this? Does Jörg or anyone else know what's happening behind the scenes?
Unfortunately I don't know C very well so bignum.c is of little help to me. I was just kind of curious it someone could explain (in plain English) the theory behind whatever miracle algorithm its using.

Hi,
I'm using ruby to sort an array where each element in the array is another array.
I have this:
Data = Data.SortBy { |Info| info[3] }
example data in this column:
3.1
2
5.65
-1
0.4
-9.43
-10.87
-2.3
It should sort this into:
5.65
3.1
2
0.4
-1
-2.3
-9.43
-10.87
But it comes out like this:
5.65
3.1
2
0.4
-1
-10.87
-2.3
-9.43...
Any recommendation on libraries to do audio processing in Ruby. I need to do the following two tasks:
Find silences, for which I'm happy to just be able to iterate over each sample in the wave.
Cut and paste pieces of wav files to form a new wav file.
Convert wav to mp3, which I will probably leave to lame anyway.
I'm looking for the...
Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good libraries for parsing .doc files (and similar formats, like .odt) to extract text, yet also keep formatting information where possible for display on a website.
Capability of doing similarly for PDFs would be a bonus, but I'm not looking as much for that.
This is for a Rails proj...
I'm wondering what the difference is between the following two modules
# First Example
module Parent
module Child
end
end
and
# Second Example
module Parent::Child
end
Using the 2nd method, it appears as though the Parent module must be previously defined, otherwise I get an 'uninitialized constant' error
Given this, what is t...
I was wondering if anyone knows of rubyzip alternatives for Ruby, that can handle various formats in particular zip / rar / 7z?
I know of libarchive, but it's not complete for my purposes ( it's a good gem thou). (To clarify, libarchive - won't work for me - cause I need to be able to run in on Windows. ( Yeah I know sucks to be me))

I'm looking for generic and open source payment libraries that support many different payment processor APIs. In other words, I'd like to develop an application using a single payment processing API, but be able to easily switch between payment gateways, such as Authorize.Net, Payflow Pro, Braintree, PayPal, Google, Amazon, etc.

This seems like it should have a straightforward answer, but after much time on Google and SO I can't find it. It might be a case of missing the right keywords.
In my RoR application I have several models that share a specific kind of string attribute that has special validation and other functionality. The closest similar example I can...
Within a method, I am using i and j as temporary variables while calculating other variables. What is an idiomatic way of getting rid of i and j once they are no longer needed? Should I use blocks for this purpose?
i = positions.first
while nucleotide_at_position(i-1) == nucleotide_at_position(i)
raise "Assumption violated" if i == 1

I've looked over the Arel sources, and some of the activerecord sources for Rails 3.0, but I can't seem to glean a good answer for myself as to whether Arel will be changing our ability to use includes(), when constructing queries, for the better.
There are instances when one might want to modify the conditions on an activerecord :inclu...
Hi all,
I am looking to execute a password change over Net-ssh and this code seems to hang:
Net::SSH.start(server_ip, "user", :verbose => :debug ) do |session|
session.process.popen3("ls") do |input, output, error|

input.puts x

Ok, so I had this working just fine before making a few controller additions and the relocation of some code. I feel like I am missing something really simple here but have spent hours trying to figure out what is going on. Here is the situation.

and

I am trying to restrict access to certain actions using a before_filter which seems easy enough. Somehow the ApplicationController is not recognizing that the current_user is the owner of the user edit action. When I take the filter off the controller correctly routes the current_user to their edit view information. Here is the code.

Hi guys:
2 hash:
h1 = { "s1" => "2009-7-27", "s2" => "2010-3-6", "s3" => "2009-7-27" }
h2 = { "s1" => "12:29:15", "s2" => "10:00:17", "s3" => "12:25:52" }
I want to merge the two hash as one like this:

"s2" => "2010-3-6 10:00:17",
"s3" => "2009-7-27 2:25:52" }
