I'm a CS student trying to find some work that lasts until mid September. I previously had a part-time job lined up, but the projects that I was needed for got canceled.

In terms of experience, I have been doing programming since my junior year of high school. That includes serious time with Python, PHP (shudder), HTML/CSS, SQL, Bash scripting, and Linux (GUI, CLI, minor server). However, the only job experience I have is a few months part time at the same company that I mentioned earlier.

I will be contacting a few people I know already, but I don't want to be limited to them. There is also the possibility of helping people in my area with computer-related problems (troubleshooting, teaching, etc.) Again, I don't want to be limited to that.

What other steps should I take to find something?

Craigslist, jobs.stackoverflow.com, word of mouth, your CS department.

Are you looking to make money or get experience? If you are looking for money, you'll probably be better off mowing lawns.

If you are looking for experience there are tons of resources...

  • Other departments in your school (psychology, sports, physics, etc) might have students or researchers who need help
  • craigslist
  • elance, guru, etc
  • open source project
  • just pick anything you might be interested in

I have also found that just by working at some company or business doing things that are not programming related, you can typically find ways to improve the efficiency or process or write programs or scripts to automate routine tasks.
