Which is better, Wordpress OR Joomla?

What are their pros and cons?

In which case you use Wordpress over Joomla and vice versa?

For development which one I can use as development framework?

Which do you want to use? Which best meets your needs?

Joomla is a CMS (content management system), while Wordpress is a blogging platform. Both can have plugins installed and extended to your needs, but I guess it depends on what you are doing.

I personally don't like Joomla even though I haven't used it in a couple of years - my memories are still alive with horror :). Wordpress is nice, although its code was quite messy last time I checked.

I've heard that Drupal is a nice CMS - try it too.

Of course it's messy, "mess" is itself written in some of their official modules! :) http://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/2.8.4/wp-admin/includes/template.php

I think it's incorrect to say that Wordpress is not a CMS. It's a publishing-focused CMS, but it's definitely possible to go beyond that.

Well, Wordpress is primarily intended for blogs, while Joomla is a CMS. Those two uses do have some overlap and you can extend both platforms greatly with plugins but in general, if you find yourself trying things that require a CMS with Wordpress then you'd probably be better off using one.

As for development platform I have had very pleasant experiences with Drupal which is a nice platform to plug into (but for a small blog and a single user it's rather an administration nightmare. This might change with Drupal 7, though).

+1 definitely, if you want to develop on it, don't use joomla... but don't use drupal either... use silverstripe!

Wordpress is super seo friendly. Not to mention, the vast plugins that save you money and time to code.

I have found Wordpress to be capable as a simple CMS. I have setup a few small business sites for people using Wordpress and their owners love it (I have converted one from Joomla because they refused to update it because they couldn't understand the admin interface). It is very easy to use from an end user (non technical) perspective.

Joomla on the other hand is a very powerful platform that I believe was developed purely to be used by technically minded people.

Both have there place but I believe Wordpress is easier to use for the end user/owner of the website.

Joomla is a bit complex but you can design very neat and powerful websites with it. I have designed more than 100 websites with joomla and i dont look forward to switch to wordpress.

With joomla you can do just about anything.
