I have seen people use everything from sticky notes to pretty expensive software. I have been asked to do a bit of research into different available software and or methods for creating and tracking our technology roadmap.

What do you or your company use to track their technology roadmap? Would you use something different?

I've seen Sharepoints and Wikis used to do this.

Agreed. I am a huge proponent for using Wikis in the professional setting!

Hmm. I would be interested in developing software to do that. I have done technology roadmapping on a larger scope (multiple companies, longer time frame) and that was all general purpose tools (digital camera for the brown paper sessions, office, inspiration, mindmanager, framemaker). Most software I've seen advertised as roadmapping is just a glorified planning database.

[edit] Not so impressive is the support for:

  • metaplan-like techniques
  • version management
  • graphical representations.

there's an awful lot that already does it, or is close.. not that that's a reason to not roll your own, of course ;)

Wikis, Sharepoint, any internal-facing CMS (Plone, Drupal, Joomla, etc), MS Project.. all sorts of options are in front of you.
