Right now, I design all of my web pages with plain old HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I use a text editor and Apache server on my computer. I make changes to my code and press refresh in the browser.

Is this a good way to design websites or is a tool like Adobe Fireworks more cutting edge? If I want to step up my game, is this software something I should look into?

Fireworks is a pretty nice tool for web design. However, if you aren't creating or slicing graphic assets -- and it sounds like you're not -- you gain little by using it.

That's good to know. I do use graphics, but I make them separately in photoshop or gimp. Graphics slicing could be a nice tool. Thanks for the comment.
You can do graphics slicing in Photoshop.

Yeah, if you're comfortable with Photoshop, you can absolutely slice in there. Fireworks is all geared around the web space, and can output the sliced image as ready-made HTML (which Photoshop maybe can also do). It really shines in concert with Dreamweaver, because you can dynamically link the files (edit the graphics while laying out the page visually), but this isn't what you need. In short, "essential?", not for everyone.
