i am a data analyst and programmer and i want to learn cognos. i suppose the only way to do it is to either pay 10k for classes or get an internship where i shadow someone who already uses it. does anyone know how i can get a tutorial for cognos and put on my resume that i reasonable understand how to use it?

I think that it may be for the same reasons that there are no tutorial for "Microsoft", you need to be more specific.

Presumably, you will have the software, otherwise a tutorial will be a little less effective.

There's usually comprehensive documentation in the /c8/webcontent/documentation folder (assuming you're using Cognos 8 BI, not Cognos Express). While not a tutorial, if you give yourself a simple project, i.e., creating a framework against a sample database, publishing the "package" and then creating reports in Report Studio, that will give you a taste of the core Cognos 8 BI package.

With respect to the Cognos OLAP products, it looks like TM1 is the "engine of the future" for Cognos, as it's the OLAP engine driving Cognos Express. I would suggest that you learn TM1 over Cognos PowerPlay, since that's where everything seems to be going. Since IBM is offering Cognos Express for evals off their site, I imagine that there should be some good tutorial docs there as well.

Another note, IBM also offers free "Proof-of-Technology" day sessions to prospective clients on a regular basis. If the company you work for is a serious prospect, an IBM rep can hook you up with an invite.
