I´m looking forward to launch a mobile application for Android, iPhone and maybe other platforms like Blackberry, Symbian, ... too in the future. What do you think is the best way to promote this application? Is setting up a website; provide a screencast with the features; running ads on ad networks enough or are there other ways too ? What ad networks you can suggest ?

Just develop a great/new/innovative/perfectly implemented application and let mouth to mouth do the rest

+1: Don't waste time promoting. Invest time in creating a great app. Create many great apps. Promotion is the least of your worries.

Guys, he asked how to promote and you tell him, don't promote. Doesn't really help.

@Roy Peleg: This site is for "programming" not "marketing". The programming answer is "write a great app". Promotion takes care of itself because everyone wants the great app. If there's a "marketing overflow", that's where this question goes.
S.Lott
Well, that's true.

Ever heard of <insert name of incredible but obscure piece of software here>? Didn't think so. Making a great app is necessary, but not sufficient. Agree this question doesn't belong here, but it's a legit question, and there are useful strategies for raising awareness, etc (see Roy's answer for a good start).

I know the question is a bit off-topic but i think in the audience of stackoverflow are a lot of one-man-developer-shows that have/had the same problem. It was not in my mind to aim on hardcore marketing guys but on developers that already solved this issue for them and their experiences. This is the cause i posted it here. If you know a "marketingoverflow" where I can ask this question on topic I´d be glad to hear about ;)

What i wanted to express is that if you have a great application it will sell by itself. Mobile market platforms will do the rest (users will vote it up, so more users will see it at first place and will download/pay for it, and so on)

Quixoto: bad example to pick some unnamed software which was "obscure". Reasons can be numerous for obscurity. You should analyze successes, not failures. Making a great app is the only useful advice. Marketing can involve any of a large number of activities, none of which have any consistent demonstrable effect. Great software is the only common theme among successes.

You have many options to boost the awareness, I would do some/all of the following depends on the app & budget:

  • Ask from mobile app review websites (e.g AppAdvice , 148 Apps , iPhone Life) to review your app (could be a bad thing for you if you have a shitty app, take that under consideration.
  • Issue a Press Release (PR Newswire are the biggest PR agency).
  • Create a website
  • Upload Youtube video demoing the game
  • Offering a limited time free version to build up userbase, maybe offer a free & premium version
  • Contact relevant blogger and ask them to write about your app for some incentives.

There are many more things you can do, but the above are a great start.

Cheers,

Roy
