Ok this is not a programming question but this thing has been bugging me for some time and I don't know where else to ask. I will delete the question if people object to it. Similar question can be found on Yahoo! Answers. I saw this car advertisement in the newspaper which shows a black and white hazy picture (heres a sample) and they ask to capture this photo with your mobile phone. What is this thing called? What is this supposed to do?

It's known as a QR code.

It's a 2-dimensional bar code called a QR code which was invented and is popular in Japan, and is becoming popular in the West now that more and more people are getting smart phones.

That specific example is a QR code with type URI and is link to their website (http://www.flick2know.com). By scanning the QR code it is possible to navigate to the website on a smart phone without having to type the address manually.
