I asked a similar question. I got a couple of references that I don't think answer the question, and then the question was closed. I then tried to find answers on my own and finally concluded that the answer is:

There are several popular etymologies, but nobody knows for sure.

I tried to answer my own question, but it seems you can't do that if the question is closed. What else to do but ask a similar question and answer that question?

Did you also read through the answers to the question that yours was marked a duplicate of? [Using “Foo” and “Bar” in examples](http://stackoverflow.com/questions/163229/using-foo-and-bar-in-examples)

What makes you think that this question would not be closed if the other was? The answer is still the same.

Yes, I read through the answers. Yes, I knew this question would be closed. The only reason I posted it was to be able to add my own answer.
matsolof
@matsolo: You can still comment on closed questions.
nico
I know. But I wanted to add an answer I can mark as the accepted one.

There is nothing to do at Sunday on this site, only to close questions and make downvotes...

I downvoted the answer, because it seems to me you didn't read my answer to my own question. Or perhaps you did read that answer and misunderstood it.
matsolof
When I posted my answer, I didn't see yours. It is impossible to ask a question and answer it in one transaction.
Alex Farber
OK. What other options are there if my question is closed and I want to add my own answer and mark that answer as the accepted one?

Have you looked at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foobar It has an etymology that might satisfy you.
