Any help here is really appreciated. I'm looking for new work and I'm working through a recruiter for this one company who "likes my resume", but... The recruiter says that are looking for someone with "commercial enterprise solution" experience and do I have that experience. Does anyone know what this exactly means? Or is it just another big fat buzzword? Thanks!!

EDIT: Thanks everyone, I think I get the idea mostly buzz, but software to big companies for integrating with other software (3rd party, etc..). I'll pick one of the many answers, almost at random to close this thing.

I would interpret that phrase to mean that you have built software that is sold to large enterprise customers. Building a product for sale can be very different from building an application for use inside your own company.

Dealing with recruiters is a whole world unto itself. What you have to remember is that recruiters typically don't come from an IT background so they're utterly clueless (and like bad salespeople, they don't tend to care about correcting something they don't see as a problem--after all, a good salesperson can sell anything, right?).

Recruiters (and HR people) only have keywords and acronyms to operate off so they will filter CVs simply by matching an employer job spec (and the acronyms it contains) against your CV. That job spec probably mentioned something about "enterprise", hence the query to you.

Enterprise is really nothing more than software used by or sold to large companies. It often relates to business-oriented applications.

So if you have anything like that, just rework your CV to make it more easily digestable by recruiter and HR types.

A big fat buzzword. Have you written any software for a medium size business. +1 for it integrating with their existing solution.

I interpret that as theyre looking for someone who has worked on large projects on an enterprise level which means perhaps theyre looking for someone with experience working in large teams, structured processes and particular development methodologies suited to large scale enterprise solutions.

Like Jim said above, that they are probably looking for experience developing software sold to enterprise clients. Usually, enterprise software is marketed as being highly scalable and as being able to integrate with other existing software.

I would add that you can possibly substitute experience building large scale applications that would be "marketed" internally, and highlight any experience you have integrating internally developed applications with "enterprise" software.

Chances are, the recruiter is looking for someone who has experience developing, and or supporting commercial software (this sounds like financial software to me) with a large user and support base. Try emphasizing aspects of your experience that would match. If it's a contractor position, or temp position, it's likely they're looking for an exact match. If it's for a permanent position, you might get an interview if you exceed at other requirements of the position.

I thinks he means experience in ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning) software.

Like SAP, or an in-house control system for a corporation. That kind of crap...

There are other recruiters out there. This means you are working with the wrong one. The fact that you have all of these people guessing what that means is proof enough!

Ah, reminds me of the recruiters who always ask how much experience I have in "GUI".

it sure is a sticky business, this software thing.

Enterprise typically indicates your ability to do Powerpoint presentations and be understood by non-technical people within IT. Large enterprises are filled with this demographic.
