Can anyone recommend a good book for software people who are looking to break into the finance industry as a developer?
Not so much software as finance: John C. Hull "Options, Futures, and Derivatives".
I work in the Finance Industry, and we couldn't care less if you know Finance. We have ex-investment bankers who work here and like having lives and wearing jeans for that. We want you to know how to program.
At least, that's my company. If you're doing software hedge fund analysis and coming up with quants yourself, that's another story I suppose.
As a whole I don't think you need to specifically focus on learning financial related technologies all though this will not hurt. At the company I work for we don't hire on financial knowledge apart from the most senior positions.
Most financial sector companies are not short of cash so they tend to hire good developers. I would say concentrate on become a great developer and you will not have a problem.
One of the best ways to get into finance is to look for jobs in the financial centers. London City New York, Frankfurt etc
Some common technologies that are widely use in the financial sector include;
- Websphere application server 6.1
- FIX protocol and fix4j
- tibco RV
In regards to books;
- How the city of london works
- How to read the financial pages

As a developer in finance industry, you are not expected to know the financial mathematics. However, you would have to be a professional in programming, for example C# and C++. Mostly, the financial skills you will be expected to know are topics about financial markets. For example, what is an option, what is a derivative and how to price an European option using simple Monte Carlo.
