I am right now doing some volunteering for a non-profit and want to help them choose and set up an email marketing solution.

What suggestions does the community have on Open-Source Email Marketing software?

Specifically I'm looking for the capabilities in terms of interfacing with the existing system (to pull some contacts) and to provide feedback of the marketing effort?

Take a look at SugarCRM. I don't know if email marketing is available in the open source version though.

OpenEMM is the first open source application for e-mail marketing. Its code base has been developed since 1999 and is used (as part of the commercial ASP product E-Marketing Manager) by companies like IBM, Siemens and Deutsche Telekom.

You can take a look at Comm100 Newsletter, an effective email marketing tool. It is fully hosted and completely FREE. With it, you can place a subscribe form on the website to collect subscriptions, and then send bulk emails to opt-in contacts as well as view the report of your sending.

Consider CivicCRM, it's a free open source CRM that has an email marketing feature, it lets you design your emails, spam to group of people (that can change dynamically) and let you manage groups of suscribers.

It either could run on a Drupal, Joomla as a plugin or as a stadealone version

I know it's not open source but I've had great success with MailChimp.

I would also suggest that if you're going to be sending out a real mailing that you use an internet marketing company to get it done for you. In terms of creativity and knowhow, it's worth it.

I would suggest you to go for web based email marketing service providers like email-m.com which is providing the free trail for unlimited days. You can send emails to 100 subscribers.
