Hi All,
I have had thoughts of trying to write a simple crawler that might crawl and produce a list of its findings for our NPO's websites and content.
Does anybody have any thoughts on how to do this? Where do you point the crawler to get started? How does it send back its findings and still keep crawling? How does it know what it fin...
I'm 16.
I run Linux, love to program, (and love to play tennis!).
I picked up a copy of K&R and am currently learning about pointers (chapter 5).
Conceptually, it's pretty easy for me.
The scope of what a programmer must(?) known seems incredibly daunting.
If I want to persue this as a career, what should I be learning?
Any insight ...
so i have been programming for about a year, and i think i have progressed relatively quickly. I am just finishing up a pretty decent mario clone with XNA, and know a number of languages to the point where i could code effectively in any of them. the thing is i dont know what i should do next. I am a software developer with over 6+ years of experience in Microsoft technologies (VB.NET, C#, SQL). The company I work for gives us a yearly education budget to spend on classes/seminars/books/etc to help advance our career.
I really don't want to take a class on "coding", I would much rather take someone on a different topic that ...
As a junior programmer I think it may be beneficial to learn solid database design. What books would you recommend on learning database design? Just to be clear, the specific aspect of design I am referring to is creating a collection of tables and their relationships.
Note: The programming books I have enjoyed reading (gaged by teachin...
Hello. It's common to read a book to learn some programming language. But, I think we need to learn the skill of learning before doing so. What I'm talking about is that I need your help to make the learning process effective. To give an example, I'm reading chapter 12 in C++ Primer Plus. And I started to forget some details from the pre...

Tomcat seems to be a good web server for Java.
What options are there for the web? I kn...
My goal is to make web applications!
I finished reading the Books "Headfirst - Java" and "Headfirst - Servlets and JSP".
Because this topic (web applications) is so big and complicated, I would like to ask what I should learn next. I feel overstrained when I read catchwords like Java EE, EJB, JSF, JPA, Glassfish ... but I won't give up...
I think small exercises would be the best way for me to learn programming. I am a beginner and I am willing to give plenty of time to this.
In my opinion, exercises should be something to write, and not long programs (10-30 lines).
What websites/articles/exercises can you recommend?

Hey Guys,
My 12 year old brother has recently expressed an interest in learning to program. I of course think this is a great idea, why not start him early? I'm wondering what you guys think with regards a book? I was thinking I should start him off on Java but I'm unsure what book would be best? Any suggestions with regards a book or e...
I just noticed that I have a very old copy of Intro to Algorithms (1st ed.) in my bookshelf that I haven't opened yet. Seeing that now, it's already in the 3rd edition, I would like to know if it's still relevant or would it be best if I get myself the latest 3rd edition instead for learning algorithms.
I've been really wanting to beco...
I guess I'm a very experienced .Net developer for more than 5 years. I also have experiences on java and even written applications with Borland C++ Builder and also done iPhone apps. I'm having a difficult time retaining the programming skills I'm actively trying to learn in an effort to apply for a junior developer position.

I was always fascinated by the topic of Machine learning until I decided to teach myself how to do it. So I came through a course provided by Stanford published online. However I was shocked of the amount of math it contained. So what is the mathematical background I should have to be able to understand the algorithms of machine learning...
At the moment I know of Python, C and Java. I'd say my knowledge of Python is intermediate, I have written a web-bot that functions reasonably well (my old 'large' program to date) and I've been using the language for about 2 months. I have solved the first 20 or so project euler problems using Python aswell. The only thing I'm not comfo...
I recently came into some blogs saying that Linq to Sql is dead. and a few days ago I saw a discussion with some people saying that Silverlight maybe will take ASP.net place! ...I don't want to ask if they are true or not but it is so annoying when you wake up and found your languages and informations in the casket! (I think that Micros...
