Hi all
I'm very new to Ruby on Rails so please go easy! I've uploaded the whole application to the server (Dreamhost) and gone through the steps. But when I try to run it I get the following error:
failed to connect to any given host:port (Mongo::ConnectionFailure)
I have installed the Mongo gem; but maybe I haven't got it configur...
Hello,
I generally use will_paginate for the pagination in my app, but have hit a stumbler on my search feature. I'm using Thinking Sphinx for doing my full-text search, which returns results paginated. The problem I'm having is that after I've received the results from Thinking Sphinx, I need to merge them with some other results and r...
What is the common way of dealing with the development.sqlite3 files with VCS (in particular, git)?
If I commit this file to the VCS, will it be merged with another developer's copy?
Or should each developer run the db:migrate task each time a new migration file is created?

I've been searching around for ways to create a gem with RSpec, but haven't found descriptive tutorials.
I started out with Ryan Bates' Making a gem, but I'm looking for a tutorial that discusses creating an acts_as style gem with RSpec.
By acts_as, I mean to say that the gem adds certain methods to an existing class in Rails. Why is t...

I've run into a spot of bother with date formats in our Rails application.
I have a date field in our view which I want to be formatted as dd/mm/yy. This is how the user will expect to enter their dates, and the datepicker control uses this format.
However, Active Record seems to be expecting mm/dd/yy.
If I enter 01/03/2010, this get...
Hi there,

there is an example provided on how to add tags to a model with is_taggable, and it works very nice (working in 5 minutes)
Now, I also need the opposite, show all records that are tagged with a certain word.
Something like:
ModelWithTag.find_by_tags "foo"
or
find_all_tagged_with "foo"
Is this possible with is_taggable ?

I make the following call to the DB.
@patientRegistration = PatientRegistration.find(:all,

This searches for a patient registration based on a given name. I get a valid @patientRegistration object. When I invoke @patientRegistration.inspect it prints correctly all the...
Hey,
i am currently writing a webapp in rails where users can mark items as favorites and also block them. I came up two ways and wondered which one is more common/better way.
1. Separate join tables
Would it be wise to have 2 tables for this? Like:
users_favorites
- user_id
- item_id
users_blocked
- user_id
- item_id
2. s...
Im learning Rails and have built a'store' application from the 'Agile Development w/ Rails' book. Ive gone beyond the lesson in the book and Im trying to add 'tags' to each product in the the store. I am using will_paginate to successfully page through records. I am also using AJAX live search via jQuery to update my results div. No problem so far. The issue I have is when trying to paginate through those live search results. I simply get "Page is loading..." with no div update. Am I missing something fundamental? I believe I may ne...
Hi,
I just deployed my Rails app to Heroku, but the Javascripts that were using Sprockets plugin don't work.
I understood that, because my Heroku app is read-only, Sprockets won't work. I've found this sprockets_on_heroku plugin that should do the work, but I don't really get how to use it :
I added config.gem sprockets in config/env...
In linking a sports event to two teams, at first this seemed to make sense:
events
- id:integer
- integer:home_team_id
- integer:away_team_id
teams
- integer:id
- string:name
However I am troubled by how I would link that up in the active record model:
class Event
belongs_to :home_team, :class_name => 'Team', :foreign_ke...
I would like to make one of the div's hidden while rendring. After page is loaded I would like it to appear on the page using virtual_effect.
I know how to do it in JS / jQuery. Is that possible with pure Ruby code using Prototype?

This is a beginner's rails learning confusion. When I learn rails, from time to time, I feel frustrated on rails' principle "Convention over Configuration". Rails uses heavily on conventions. A lot of them are just naming conventions. If I forget a convention, I will either use the wrong naming and get unexpected result or get things mag...
Hi all,
What is the current practice like to write user-specific configuration settings into a rails application?
For example, privacy settings in a social networking application.
I know application-wide settings can be stored in a .yml file in config/ but what about users?
