I develop exclusively on VMs. I currently run Boot Camp on a MacBook Pro and do all my development on a series of Virtual PC VMs for many different environments. This post by Andrew Connell litterally changed the way I work.
I'm thinking about switching to Fusion and running everything in OS X but I wasn't able to answer the following q...

What is the best way to setup one linux box to listen on its serial port for incoming connections? I've done a lot of googling but I can't find the right combination of commands to actually get them to talk! My main objective is to provide a serial interface to running instances of kvm/qemu VMs which currently only have a VNC interface (...
What is the best way to backup VMWare Servers (1.0.x)?
The virtual machines in question are our development environment, and run isololated from the main network (so you can't just copy data from virtual to real servers).
The image files are normally in use and locked when the server is running, so it is difficult to back these up with...
Background:
I'm running a full-time job and a part-time job in the weekends, and both my employers have supplied a laptop for me to work on. Of course I also have my powerful workstation at home to work from, and sometimes when I'm at the office at my weekend job (it's in another city) I'm working from yet another workstation.
Problem:...

We recently bought a new rack and set of servers for it, we want to be able to redeploy these boxes as build servers, QA regression test servers, lab re-correlation servers, simulation servers, etc.
We have played a bit with VMWare, VirtualPC, VirtualBox etc, creating a virtual build server, but we came across a lot of issues when we tr...
We use Hyper-V extensively in our development environment. Each developer has a virtual server that they own and then we have a bunch of build, test, R&D, and staging virtual servers.
Is there any documented or best practice way to duplicate a virtual machine in Hyper-V?
What I would really like to be able to do is to split a machine ...
What VM technologies exist for Linux, their pros and cons, and which is recommended for which application?
Since this kind of question can be asked for X other than "VM technologies for Linux", and since the answer changes with progress, I suggest to define a template for this kind of pages. Those pages will have the tag 'stateoftheart...
I'm using VMware Workstation 6.0 for simulation of tight clusters of "blades" in a "chassis". Both the host and target OSs are Linux. Each "chassis" uses a vmnet switch as a virtual backplane, to which the virtual blades connect. Other vmnet switches are used to mediate point-to-point connections between mutiple virtual ethernet adapters...
I am using VMware Server 1.0.7 on Windows XP SP3 at the moment to test software in virtual machines.
I have also tried Microsoft Virtual PC (do not remeber the version, could be 2004 or 2007) and VMware was way faster at the time.
I have heard of Parallels and VirtualBox but I did not have the time to try them out. Anybody has some ben...
Server virtualization is a big thing these days, so I'm tasked at work to install some of our software on a virtualized server and see what happens. Long story short: a rsync transfer promptly brings the virtualized server to its knees. The virtualization host is a beefy machine with no other load; I don't think this should be happening....
The IT department where I work is trying to move to 100% virtualized servers, with all the data stored on a SAN. They haven't done it yet, but the plan eventually calls for moving the existing physical SQL Server machines to virtual servers as well.
A few months ago I attended the Heroes Happen Here launch event, and in one of the SQL ...
I can't figure out what is the difference between these two programs.

I've been hearing a lot about about how the new version of VMWare Fusion can run virtual operating systems in "headless mode".
A Google search makes it clear that other virtualisation products also have similar features, however, I have not been able to find a good description of what this actually means? What is happening when you do ...
I'm currently working on a server-side product which is a bit complex to deploy on a new server, which makes it an ideal candidate for testing out in a VM. We are already using Hudson as our CI system, and I would really like to be able to deploy a virtual machine image with the latest and greatest software as a build artifact.
So, how...
I am seeking a backup tool to back-up virtual OS instances run through Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. According to the MS docs, it should be possible to do it live through volume shadow copy service, but I am having trouble finding any tool for any.

Simple question really, I would like to learn some cocoa, primarily for playing around with the Iphone SDK, but first i need a mac.
